The usage purposes of these additives can be listed as concrete pouring in hot weathers the carriage of the concrete to far distances and the production of pumped concrete.
Retarders do not reduce the exotherm or the peak temperature of mass concrete. They only delay the onset of the exotherm. The only effective way to control exotherm is by the use of less reactive binders such as pfa or ggbs. Chilled mixing water or cooling the aggregate are also effective ways of reducing the peak temperature.
Inorganic compounds commonly used as cement retarders are borax (Na 2 B 4 O 7 •10H 2) and other borates such as boric acid (H 3 BO 3) and its sodium salt and zinc oxide (ZnO). Borates are commonly used as a retarder aid for hightemperature retarders at BHCT of 300°F (149°C) and greater.
